Backing up your MySpace page

MAC

We answer questions from bloggers all the time… The most common one is “How do I backup pages on TypePad?”.  So being the web heads we are, we checked out some documentation about a essential plugin for Firefox titled ScrapBook.  We downloaded it, tested it, and gave it a real workout. And suprise!? This works for every Web 2.0 we tried!

ScrapBook is a good way to keep all that content you have on any number of sites protected with a local copy that your online backup can automatically archive for you. With one program! It just saves it. No command lines, fancy plugins or holding your tongue just right. If bad things happen to one of your sites, you’ve got the content.

How you say? Here’s how it works.

A First, go to the ScrapBook download page (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/427). Click the Install Now button (green) and restart Firefox when instructed.

B Once Firefox has restarted, you’re ready to use ScrapBook.

C Click onto one of your social websites you’d like to save with ScrapBook. When your there, click “Capture Page As” on the menu.

D Use “Capture Page As” to set the depth of links you want to copy. This is a important! This backs up all the links on your page automatically. If you had the depth set to 0 (zero), you wouldn’t be able to copy those extra pages. If it was set to 1, you’d be able to. But if it is set to 2, you will save all the linked pages and so on.

E After you’ve selected the different options, click Capture. A copy is now saved! Now, go to the ScrapBook menu and click Show in Sidebar. You’ll see the pages you’ve captured listed.

Here’s what we have so far? You now have a local copy of all the content on your FaceBook, etc. page. So if anything goes south, your covered. But as they show on Cable TV… “But we have more for you”.

If you have a backup to internet product like OPENRSM on your computer just make sure that it’s configuration has your personal files selected for backup. All your social website content is backed up this way and backed up with the rest of your data. And Firefox runs on windows, Mac, and Linux all the same.  Not only will your computer have a full internet backup, but your social websites will be too.

Hiding your Files in Full view

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

Your thinking why would someone choose an Internet backup system. Well, theres lots of reasons. First, if your backing up your files on the Internet you don’t need specialized hardware or software. As long as you have Cable, DSL, etc., nothing else is needed.Second, you can retreive your files from any computer connected to the Internet (well, only by you of course). And with good security and encryption, nobody will get your data or even realize where it is.

The Internet has thousands of pedabytes of disk space available, and there are several good services you can find that specialize in Internet backup.  I pay around four bucks per month for my site and I’m backing up 30+ Gigs. Now I have used around 60% of my backup volume which leaves tons of space for future backups at a rate that’s more than affordable.

The first step is to decide which site to use. Most of the “free trial” providers are way more expensive each month that the providers that use simple pricing. So you can do a little homework and get a better deal by discovering and joining a site with great features and no hidden expenses.  It’ll save you alot of money in the end. With all the blogs, internet backup comparison sites, etc. it’s easy to make an informed decision.

So now, you’ve decided which service provider you’ll use. The next step is to decide what files, music, pictures, financial data, etc. that you need to keep backed up. The best online backup providers have software that does all the work for you. and will automatically upload files after they’ve been encrypted for security. As you can easily now see is that the best providers are also the easiest to use.And the quality services will work on all operating systems (like Linux, Windows, and Apple) with every feature.

The reason is they want you to use their service and if it’s too difficult, customers will go someplace else. Just as in any business the market is a competitive one and services who don’t have a rich feature set or are only providing services for Windows or MAC, etc. generally arn’t very reliable and could not be there in a month or two. Therefore, make sure they support Windoes, MAC, and Linux.I they’re a quality provider they will.

So, now that you have an overview of the concept of Internet backups, let’s review some questions for you to ask.

Do they have software that makes it easy?

Do they provide all features on MAC, Windows, and Linux?

Can all your computers be backed up with one login account?

What kind of Internet backup is it? How frequent are the backups?

Do they encrypt your data? You must have encryption (preferably 256bit AES) for maximum security.

You have other issues that are important to you.But these questions will help you narrow down your selection to only the best providers in short order.

Internet Attached Storage is Online Backup on Steroids

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

“To Serve and Protect” is a phrase usually bringing thoughts of your local police department. But your photos, documents, and other files can be protect with a great option of safe media free storage. Internet Attached Storage stores your information outside your office, home, or backup media.. thus both protecting and serving you your data.

Although your computer files are safe from many threats, there is still the danger of flood or fire, or computer related damage, like hard drive failure, viruses, or human error damaging your data. Digital information is hard and sometimes impossible to recover.  And if you have a laptop computer or netbook theft is a very real danger.

Internet Attached Storage is a cost effective and practical option. Your files are first encrypted, then transferred to your Internet Attached Storage space to keep them available but only available to you. Accounts are password protected for security.

There are some key considerations when using Internet Attached Storage. Things to keep in mind are:

Continuous Backup

The more often you backup your data, the less likely information will be lost. Best of breed Internet Attached Storage includes network drive and file synchronization.

Keep your files

Although Internet Attached Storage is secure, it’s also just common sense to keep the originals on your computer.  Thus making it easier to simply synchronize changes to your Internet Attached Storage.

Organize your information

There is no sense in storing files online if you can’t locate them later. The file and folder structure of your own disk is mirrored with Internet Attached Storage. It’s a good idea to do so.

Keep your password safe

Online storage accounts require a password to access them. Keeping your password and username safe keeps your personal files from being compromised.

People have files that can’t be replaced, like tax returns and email, and files that it would be nice to access anytime and anywhere, like a photographs. Types of data you should upload to Internet Attached Storage:

Photos

Movies

Music Files

Financial Records

Work Related Files

Manuals

Email Archives

Internet Attached Storage provides features beyond online backup like network drive and data synchronization features that give you operational benefits while protecting your data.

Which Internet Attached Storage product do we like?  We particularly like the features, cost, and reliability of OPENRSM CloudBackup.  It gives a great balance of features that go further than online backup that is particularly cost effective.  We can’t say enough good about it.
